When I think about faithfulness of Christians I have one thought that keeps going through my head. The only way that I can be faithful is because God is trustworthy. My faithfulness is a direct reflection of how trustworthy I believe God to be.
As we have for all the fruits of the Spirit, I want to look at how Jesus displayed this characteristic. Jesus’ faithfulness was perfect, because he was perfect. It’s perfect because Jesus knows better than anyone just how trustworthy the Father is. Jesus follows God’s plan even when it’s not what Jesus wanted to happen. If we look at the prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane we can see that he wanted there to be a different way. I don’t believe that he was jumping up and down excited to go to the cross. But, he still did it because he trusted the Father’s plan.
That’s where deep honest faithfulness comes from: a real true understanding of who the father is. Jesus was able to rest in the father knowing that whatever befell him, the father’s plan was worth it.
Psalm 91:4 “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.”
We can be faithful because we serve a faithful God. When things seem tough and out of our control we can be faithful to what God has called us to, because he is faithful to protect us. His faithfulness is our shield. The images of His promises standing in front of me, and his protection falling over me like a mother hen’s wing bring me so much comfort. They also give me courage and strength to face whatever he has for me because I know that I do not walk alone. I can be faithful because God’s word is trustworthy.
We know that the things he promises in this book, like refuge and love and kindness, and eternal life with him are all true and that we can trust that. Knowing that means we can be faithful to whatever he calls us to do. Whether it’s getting up and leaving our homes for somewhere else, working a job we don’t enjoy, battling with kids to brush their teeth and do their homework. All of that can be done for the glory of God in faithfulness because we serve a God who is faithful to give us what we need to accomplish our task. And he has already been faithful in providing the gift of Salvation.
