#MirrorMirror: You are New

“This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person.  The old life is gone; a new life has begun.”  2 Corinthians 5:17 (NLT)

So, this week is a big week for me.  This Friday my husband and I will be signing the papers and getting the keys to our new house.  We are so excited, to say the least.  I have been picturing where our things will go.  There are new rooms to fill, new appliances to use, and new neighbors to meet.
New is nice, but new can also be scary.  There is a shift in how everything about our lives will function now.  We will have our own space, but we will no longer get to see my Mom and Stepdad every day.  We will now have a lot of work to do getting the house ready for our things to arrive.  We will have different maintenance tasks than we have had before.  Just listing a few of those things out here can be a bit scary.  I get a little anxious whenever I think about a new step in my life.

God has called me to a new journey in my life of writing and speaking.  While that is awesome and I have been waiting years to really get this journey started, it’s scary.  I am teaching people about the truths of God, but what if I get it wrong?  New responsibilities can be overwhelming.  Worrying if you’re ready, wondering if you’re going to get it right.

Along with those anxieties come the fun and exciting.  New can be amazing; like new car smell, breaking in new shoes, and getting new school clothes.  We just enjoy new, even if it can be scary.  We worry that the old will creep back up in our lives.  We also may think that while the old wasn’t so good, it was comfortable.  And, isn’t comfortable better than scary?  NO!!!  God calls us out of our comfort zones into the new adventures where He will show up bigger and better than ever before.

Our Heavenly Father loves new.  God loves to make things new.  We can see that in our new seasons, and how His mercies are new each day.  He makes all things new.  That includes you and me.
When we became Christians we became brand new creations.  God doesn’t see us as those people we used to be, instead, He sees us as the creation we were intended to be.  He sees us through the love of Christ and all that he did for us on the cross.  God doesn’t see the mistakes we will make along the way, instead, He sees our success and the lives we will bring to his kingdom.  God doesn’t see all the cleaning that will have to take place in your life, instead, he sees all the glory that will come when his work on you is complete.

That means that we no longer have to say, “But I’m just like that.”  “Sorry, I’m just a grumpy person.”  “I wish I could change, but I’ve always been overweight.”  “You’ll just have to deal with it; I’ve always been a little bit bossy.”  “I wish I could be stronger, but I’ve always been a doormat.”  We don’t have to say these things anymore, because God tells us we are new.  We can say new things like this.

“I’m chosen.”
“I’m a princess.”
“I’m loved.”
“I’m blessed.”

I think you get the picture.  While it’s imperative that God sees us as new creations, it’s also important that we do too.  It’s also crucial that we see new as a positive thing.  Change is going to happen. That’s is a certainty.  Meeting that new adventure knowing that God has set it in motion can make it all a little less intimidating.  The best way to help us believe and remember to look toward the new is reminding ourselves regularly who God created us to be.  That means being in the word so that we can hear it straight from our Daddy.
