God knows us. God knows where we are. God knows what's going on in our hearts. God knows our thoughts. God knows. Sometimes that's a hard thing for us to wrap our minds around. God knows everything there is to know about me. Sometimes that makes me smile, and sometimes it makes me cringe.
I am in fact, a Star Wars fan. I even like the prequels, even though I've been told that they aren't the same quality as the originals. But, I enjoy them so much. I enjoy the fantasy of space travel. I enjoy the family story of Luke and Leia. I really enjoy the backstory of Darth and Luke and the whole gang. But, one of my favorite quotes is between Leia and Han Solo. My husband and I have used it with one another often. They are getting ready to freeze Han in carbonite and the guards are holding Leia back. She is finally able at that moment when she thinks she'll never see Han again, tell him that she loves him. Han looks her straight in the face and says, "I know."
He seems almost like a jerk in that moment. But, the truth is that he just already knew. She didn't have to say it. He knew. Although, my girl heart watches it and wants him to say, "I love you too." every time, but that's also just not Han Solo style. However, Han does love her.
This is kind of what it's like to tell God that we love him. He could simply say to us, "I know." But, God doesn't say that. God says, "I love you too." That's what the Bible is. It's a love letter from God to His children. Love is about having a relationship, in this case with God. If you want to see a real relationship, turn to Psalms. Most of that book was written by David and you get a first-hand look at what his and God's relationship was really like.
In Psalms, you'll find love poems where the author just exalts God and all his mighty power. You will also find letters asking where God is. You will find 911 calls, because the author is in need of real help, both physical and spiritual. You'll find real faith in the book of Psalms, both the good and the not so good. The great thing about both sides of that coin is that God already knows.
God loves us just as we are. He loves us in the midst of joy and sorrow. God loves us when things are awesome and when they are awful. God loves us when we hate him and run away. And, God loves us when we return to him and say, "God, I love you." He says, "I know." and He pulls us back into his loving arms and makes us feel safe, and loved, and strong, and capable, and fearless.
Psalm 139 is one of those Psalms where David is in awe of who God is. David knows that he is not a perfect man. He knows that he has sinned and that God knows those things. That's why he starts this Psalm by saying that God has examined his heart and knows everything about him. God knows the choices that we are going to make and places we will get ourselves into, good or bad.
I love the way that verse 5 gives comfort. No matter where I go, God has been three before me and He's guarding me from behind. As far as God is concerned, I'm protected from all sides. Then David goes on to explain that I can not escape God or His spirit. No matter what I've done or where I try to go, God is always with me. So even when I try and run away, He's still there. That may make some of us feel a bit uneasy. When we think about everything that God has seen us do, or that He has seen us be the worst versions of ourselves, we fear that we may lose God's love. David offers comfort for that thought as well.
"How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered." Psalm 139:17
God still has precious thoughts about us. David says that God has so many precious thoughts about us that they can't even be numbered. I can't even imagine that many good things about myself. How awesome must God's grace and mercy be for him to think precious things about us?
So, when we come to God and say, "I love you." he doesn't sound quite like Han Solo. I would imagine God might say something like this.
Me: "I love you."
God: "I know. I've always known your heart, and I love you more than you could ever understand."
Sometimes it's hard to imagine how God can love us when he knows everything. But, He does. Open up His love letter (Bible) and see just how much he loves you yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
