#MirrorMirror: You are Victrious

“But thanks be to God, who gives us victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 15:57 NASB

How often do I give up on God when I don’t get the result I think I should?  How often do I determine that I have failed and that I’m no good, and therefore worthless to God?   The answer to those questions for me is far too many times on all accounts.  But, what do I do about it?  What can I do?  We can begin to understand that God has already won it for us.

I have to know the truth.  I have to know that I don’t have to “win.”  God has already done that for me.  All I have to do is be willing to show up and follow through on his directions.  And, no matter what the outcome, that journey is already a success.

I am a self-proclaimed inspirational sports movie fanatic.  If you could ask my husband he would most definitely corroborate that title.  I get so into them like I'm watching them for the first time.  To me every play is real, every actor an athlete, and every victory well deserved and earned.  This time of year, when I'm completely done with hot weather and fall is right around the corner I start to pull out the football movies.  I'll start with Rember the Titans.  Who doesn't love a great coming together story about overcoming odds and winning?  It also doesn't hurt that it's in my home state.  I always felt so connected to the coaches daughter.  Next, I'll put in The Blind Side.  Again, overcoming odds, bringing people together, family, and Sandra Bullock is a spitfire.  I so enjoy accents, and she does a pretty good job I think.  There will be some Friday Night Lights, Little Giants, and maybe We are Marshall if they show it on TV.  But, the one that really gets me to the point that I end up in tears is Facing the Giants

Facing the Giants is my favorite because it's not just about football, or winning a game, or even about coming together and overcoming obstacles.  This movie is about winning with Jesus.  There are more giants being faced than the ones on the football field in this movie.  The coach and his wife have their own giants to face.  The school has its own giants to face.  The players are facing giants that are unique to each one of them.  It just warms my heart and gives me God inspiration to be reminded that Jesus has already won our game; whatever it looks like.  If we are trying to win the right job, God's already got it picked out and will send you there.  It may take a while, but he will not abandon you.  Your game may be a ministry.  God has already won that battle too.  If he is calling you to that he will without a doubt be there to grow that ministry into whatever He wants it to be.  We have to be willing to see God's victory and not our own.

I also really love an inspirational sports movie that's based on a true story.  But, I really hate when they change the story to that the team of interest during the movie wins the big game at the end.  I think we do a disservice to those teams by downplaying what they really went through.  Coming out on top is not what life always looks like.  We don't always win the trophy or take home the medal.  It doesn't change how hard those teams worked.  It doesn't change the life metamorphisms that those players went through.  By making it so that they always win we just fool ourselves into believing that the only way a story is worth telling is if they win according to the world.  I wish I could put a disclaimer at the end of every sports movie that looked like this.

God wins for us.  He tells us right here in Corinthians that He gives us victory.  Because Jesus won, then we win.  That’s the whole story.  Yes, it may be difficult at times.  Jesus followers are not promised easy races.  Yes, we may feel like quitting.  Jesus followers are not promised we will always feel like running it out.  Yes, we may wish that He would give our assignment to someone else.  Jesus followers are not promised a clear picture of how it will all work out.  But, the truth is… He has already promised you the victory as long as you are going following Jesus.
